The Honorable Rod R. Blagojevich
Governor of Illinois
207 State Capitol
Springfield, IL  62706

RE:  SB 2275

Dear Governor Blagojevich:

The League of Women Voters of Illinois urges you to sign SB 2275, a measure that amends the Juvenile Court Act by raising the maximum age of original juvenile court jurisdiction from 17 to 18 for misdemeanor offenses.

The League notes:

  • The majority of other states have selected the age of 18.
  • Eighteen is the accepted age of majority in such matters as signing contracts and voting.
  • The effective date of the legislation, January 2010, allows time to prepare for implementation.
  • The legislation sets up a task force to study the feasibility of raising the age for felonies.
  • SB 2275 has received impressive support from both houses.

For these reasons, the League believes that SB 2275 merits your support.

Thank you for your consideration.

Yours truly,

Paula Lawson                                                     Eileen Subak
