Governor of Illinois

Springfield, IL. 62706
RE: SB2821
Dear Governor Blagojevich:
The League of Women Voters of Illinois urges you to sign SB2821 which will make Illinois a member state of the Interstate Compact for Juveniles, replacing the compact at 45 ILCS 10.
The existing compact, created in 1955 and subsequently approved by Illinois, has outlived its usefulness. It was not designed to handle large numbers of youth and lacks effective enforcement.
This compact is critical to ensure the effective supervision and care of juveniles under the authority of the courts or paroling authorities in states other than the location where they are residents or their cases adjudicated.
The proposed Compact is designed to bring about:
- More uniform laws and practices
- Ability to promulgate and enforce rules
- Increased public safety providing information on who is moving, where and when
- A board to administer the Compact
For these reasons, the League believes SB2821 is an important step forward, and we urge you to sign it into law. Thank you for your consideration of this request.
Sincerely,
Paula Lawson, President Eileen Subak
