LEAGUE PRESENTS CON-CON CONS
The League of Women Voters of (local LWV) has announced
its opposition to the passage of the call for a constitutional
convention that will be on the ballot at the November 4 general
election.
"Following a study of the risks and benefits of holding
a convention, our membership across the state overwhelmingly
rejected calling a convention at this time,” said (name)
, president of the (local) League. “We believe
that the risk of exposing the entire constitution to revision
could lead to the loss of important gains made in the 1970 constitution.
In addition, the easier amendment process made possible by our
current constitution has been working relatively well, so issues
that have been raised as requiring a change in the constitution
can be handled by the amendment process. We believe that the
cost of a convention, estimated at $78 million or more, outweighs
benefits to be gained by a potential rewrite of the whole document,”
she added.
The League urges a NO vote in November and invites interested
groups to contact (name, phone #) if they desire a
representative from the League to speak to their members about
the many reasons why this question should be defeated.
