| Help Convince Legislators to Support Campaign Contribution Limits
for Legislative Leaders and
Political Parties
May 12, 2011
ACTION NEEDED:
Ask Legislators to sign on as sponsors of HB 1344 and SB 1272 in support of contribution limits on legislative leaders and political parties.
Legislation which would close a major loophole in the state’s new campaign contributions limits - SB 1272 in the Senate and HB 1344 in the House - has been blocked by legislative leaders.
Your help is needed to convince more legislators to sign on as sponsors of these bills to place limits on general election campaign contributions from legislative leader PACs and political parties.
Click HERE for phone numbers and addresses of key legislators to call or write. These legislators have indicated their support for campaign finance reform in the past. Ask Senate members to sign on as co-sponsors of SB 1272 and ask House members to co-sponsor HB 1344.
BACKGROUND:
Unless more legislators have the courage to tell legislative leaders that this loophole should be closed, those leaders are not going to permit a vote on either of those bills.
The leaders don't want this loophole closed. They want to maintain the power to pay for most of the commercials, direct mail, polling and campaign managers in targeted legislative races.
We believe that's not good for democracy in Illinois.
Reducing the leader/party contributions that dominate targeted campaigns can help level the playing field and encourage candidates to rely on more small contributions from local supporters.
Current sponsors of HB1344 are Karen May, Al Riley, Naomi Jakobsson, Sara Feigenholtz, Robyn Gabel, Jack D. Franks, Ann Williams and Sidney H. Mathias.
Current sponsors of SB 1272 are Heather A. Steans, Michael Noland, M. Maggie Crotty, Susan Garrett, William Delgado, Michael W. Frerichs, John G. Mulroe, Christine Radogno, John J. Millner, and Pamela J. Althoff.
