| ACTION NEEDED: Call your State Representative
today [May 30, 2008]. Ask your representative to vote for
passage of HB2760 which is scheduled for a third reading in
the House. This bill gives the State Police the ability to
revoke the FOID card of anyone failing to report a lost or
stolen firearm within 72 hours of discovering the loss.
BACKGROUND: House Bill 2760, sponsored by
Representatives Madigan, Currie and Molaro, is scheduled for
a vote on Friday, May 30t. The bill gives the State Police
the ability to revoke the FOID Card of anyone failing to report
a lost or stolen firearm within 72 hours of discovering it
had been stolen or lost. Reporting these weapons lost or stolen
gives law enforcement the tools to identify individuals engaging
in, and profiting from, such trade and distribution while
making gun trafficking more difficult for criminals.
The vote is expected to be very close. Please tell your state
representative to vote to pass HB 2760. If you do not have
the phone number for your state representative, go to www.ilga.gov.
For a fact sheet on HB2760 go to http://www.icpgv.org/icpgv_policy6.html.
You can also search the ILGA web site for the specific language
on the bill.
Passage of HB 2760 requiring lost or stolen firearms to be
reported within 72 hours would be a meaningful step forward
in tracking weapons. After you contact your state representative,
please email and call friends and ask them to do the same!
