Watchful Advocacy Issues: Grassroots Action
Issues are defined where activity is anticipated at the state legislative level - issues where we have strong member interest and an opportunity for the League to make an impact. Program issue specialists will follow these issues. Lobbying activity will be generally limited to grassroots advocates; issues may also have an educational component.
Program Positions
Government Issues: The Illinois League takes action on the state level in the following public policy areas based on these LWVUS positions: citizen rights, including citizen’s right to know/citizen participation, individual liberties and public policy on reproductive choices; Congress and the Presidency; election process, including apportionment, campaign finance,
and selection of the President’ and voting right.
- Constitutional Implementation and Amendments
- Change of County Government Sturcture
- Criminal Justice: increased us of intermediate sanctions; sufficient probation officers
- Death Penalty Abolition (achieved June 2011)
- State Election Law
- Fiscal Policy and Tax Reform
- Campaign Finance and Ethics Reform
- Redistricting Reform
- Gun Violence Prevention
Social Policy Issues:The Illinois League takes action on the state level in the following public policy areas based on these LWVUS position: child care; early intervention for children at risk; equality of opportunity, including opposition to school vouchers and tuition tax credits, employment issues, affirmative action, fair housing, and equal rights; fiscal policy (see Government); gun control (see Government), health care’ meeting basic human needs; urban policy; and violence prevention.
- Children’s Services: Work to restore parole & other services to Il. Dept. of Juvenile Justice; modify automatic transfers; consider age a factor in sentencing youth in criminal court.
- Immigration
- Mental Health: Coordination of Services
- Income Assistance for all low income individuals
- Schools: high quality system of elementary and secondary school; local control and budgets with minimum program requirements
Natural Resources Issues:The Illinois League takes action on the state level in the following public policy areas based on these LWVUS positions: agriculture policy; environmental protection and pollution control; natural resources; public participations; and resource management.
- Climate Change
- Land Use: policy for Illinois that supports orderly growth and protects environment
- Pesticides
- Large-scale livestock facilities
