Money in Politics:
The League of Women Voters of Illinois supports merit selection of judges. Unfortunately, voters are often overwhelmed by the number of judges on the ballot and are unable or unwilling to make an informed choice. Recent studies show that fewer than 50% of voters cast their ballots for judges as opposed to the political offices that appear higher up on the November general election ballot.
The League has taken measures to correct this problem. The LWVIL Judicial Reform Specialist recently completed a second term on the Judicial Performance Commission of Cook County (JPC). In 2012, the JPC evaluated Judges of the Circuit Court and Appellate Court whose terms expired this year. The reports issued do not contain recommendations, as other bar groups do. Instead the JPC assembled research-based evaluations that provided data about judicial performance to the judge's supervising judge, the Chief Judge of the Circuit Court of Cook County, and the voters. The JPC is based on the performance commission model of judicial evaluation currently in use in 18 states.
