LWVIL Convention 2009

Representatives from 34 Leagues and 2 ILO's (Inter-League Organizations) met for the LWVIL’s 54rd State Convention from June 12 – 14, 2009, in East Peoria, IL. The convention theme was “Everyone Counts… On League and In League.”

Action Focus 2009-2011

  • Fiscal Policy and Tax Reform (including school funding & social services)
  • Campaign Finance and Ethics Reform.
  • True Census Count 2010 and Redistricting Reform.

Awards
The top Membership Award this biennium went to the Park Forest Area League, which increased its membership by 32%. The 2009 Community Impact Award went to the Rochelle League for their extraordinary efforts toward securing a public transportation system for rural Ogle County. Read More. The Carrie Chapman Catt award went to Sandra Locke of the LWV of Greater Rockford for her many years of service to the League and her community. Read More.

Awards for Local League Achievement
Thirteen local Leagues were honored at convention for their accomplishments in these categories: Community Collaboration, Advocacy, Voter Service, and Website/ Commmunications. Read about them HERE.

Will of the Convention
Three "Will of the Convention" motions were adopted. In brief, delegates…

  1. Called for the Governor and the General Assembly of the State of Illinois to restore the state's fiscal health and to provide for Illinois' future.
  2. Urged the General Assembly to lower the campaign finance limits to the federal level and treat transfers and in-kind contributions from other candidates on the same basis.
  3. Urged the Governor to veto HB 182, a bill that would allow a person to carry concealed handguns into another person's home.

Other Business
There were no Bylaw amendments; proposed Budgets for fiscal years 2009-10 and 2010-11 were approved; and the slated Officers and Directors for 2009-11 were elected by voice vote. The PMP (per-member-payment) for 2009-10 remains the same; however, the following year, 2010-11, PMP will increase by $1.
