IL FAIR MAP: Where do we go from here?
We were unable to gather enough signatures to get the Fair Map Amendment on the November ballot. Nevertheless, we have been asked by many League members, other partners and the press if we will undertake another citizens' initiative in the future. Over the summer we will analyze the results of the recent petition drive to determine our strengths and weaknesses and to make recommendations for the future. To those of you who circulated petitions, tell us about your experience and give us advice about how to do this better the next time. Please email Jan Czarnik - execdirector@lwvil.org - with your ideas. Thanks!
FISCAL CRISIS: Pass a Responsible Budget this Session
Call your state legislators this week and ask them to pass a Responsible Budget NOW! The League of Women Voters, as part of The Responsible Budget Coalition, needs YOU to deliver a message to lawmakers:
Oppose a budget plan based on gimmicks, massive borrowing and painful cuts to schools and other vital services. Do the job right - pass a responsible budget with adequate revenue. The alternative is unacceptable. CALL 1-800-719-3020 to be easily connected with your legislative office. To find out who your legislators are, click HERE.
MOCK ELECTIONS THIS FALL: Get ready now!
Contact your local schools! Tell teachers that the illinoisstudentvote.org website will soon feature new curriculum materials that they can download for free. Some materials will be available as early as June – a boon for teachers who want to get an early start.

New student-oriented features will encourage more students to visit illinoisstudentvote.org. “Voter Minutes” is one example. Students will write, perform, and videotape brief Q and A’s about voting issues. These videos will appear on the ISV website for everyone to see. |
LWVUS CONVENTION: Less than a month away
Whether or not you will be attending the Convention, you can get info on the issues to be considered (LWVUS Board is recommending a study of the “Federal Role in Public Education”) and all that's scheduled to happen (Prominent speakers include Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius). More on the Convention:
Our leaders go to Convention "informed, but not instructed," so we can't be sure of the outcome of any vote - and there have been surprises!
