ACTION ALERT:
Override the President's Veto of SCHIP
Please contact your Congressman to override the
President's October 3, 2007, veto of H.R.976 - the Children's
Health Insurance Program Reauthorization Act.
This was the compromise bill to renew and expand SCHIP. Although
the Senate passed the bill by a veto-proof majority, the House vote
was not enough to override. LWVIL is especially targeting four
Illinois Congressmen, and we urge you to contact their offices immediately
and ask them to vote to override the veto of H.R.976 SCHIP.
The four Illinois Congressmen are: Judy Biggert
Tim Johnson
Peter Roskam
Jerry Weller
WHAT IS SCHIP? SCHIP is the program of health care
for low-income children. H.R. 976 would authorize $36 billion over
five years to provide healthcare coverage to about 10 million children,
about 4 million more than covered over the past 10 years.
WHY IS THIS IMPORTANT TO THE LEAGUE? The League supports a health care
system that provides a basic level of quality care; supports the well-being, development and safety of all children
and has urged health care coverage of uninsured children. For the first time this bill would establish parity for
mental health benefits by prohibiting discriminatory financial requirements or treatment limitations.
