The Illinois League is participating in the Democracy
Project, a grassroots petition drive to place an amendment on the
November 4, 2008, general election ballot that would require a 21-day
"public review" period before any non-emergency
bill could be passed by our legislature.
Under current practices in the Illinois General Assembly, a
bill can be voted into law before the public - and many legislators
- have the opportunity to review its contents. This amendment
would allow citizens to know what is being proposed before it becomes
law.
To get the Show Us Amendment on the ballot, supporters must gather
350,000 signatures throughout the state before May 1, 2008.
Here is how you can help:
- Review the information about the petition drive at www.ShowUs.org.
- Sign up on the support page at www.ShowUs.org to join the movement.
- Download the petition for your community at www.ShowUs.org/petition.
- Circulate a petition and talk to your friends and neighbors about it.
- Carefully review your petitions to make sure they comply with all requirements before submitting them.
Chris Slowik and Syvia Tillman (issues@lwvil.org)
are coordinating this effort for the LWVIL. The help of all local
Leagues, as well as individuals, is needed to get this proposal on
the ballot. |
