A growing problem in our country is the lack of affordable,
accessible, quality health care. Spending on health care in the
United States has risen to over 15% of our GDP, a higher percentage
than in any other country. But our life expectancy rate is lower
than that in other developed countries, and our infant mortality
rate is higher. The United States is the only developed
country that does not provide access to health care for all its
population.
After a study in 1993, the League of Women Voters agreed that we
should Promote a health care system for the United States
that provides access to a basic level of quality care for all U.S.
residents and controls health care costs. We have supported
appropriate legislation on a national level, and will continue to
do so. Several states are implementing plans to insure all their
residents, including Maine, Hawaii, Vermont, and Massachusettes,
and more have proposed plans, including California and Pennsylvania.
The League of Women Voters of Illinois supports Illinois Covered, the plan for affordable health care in our
state, embodied in Senate Bill 5.
