Natural Resources Issues

Land Use
The League supports a state land use policy that addresses the problem of conflicting uses for the land resources of Illinois. This position has been the basis for local League action on a variety of issues, including landfill siting, provisions for orderly growth and adequate low-income housing, and the preservation of open space.

The League will monitor and support legislation that balances the desire for growth of communities with the need to protect farmland, green spaces, and air and water quality, as well as promoting transportation options and increased housing availability.

Pesticides
The League supports the reduction in pesticide use and the promotion of non-toxic alternatives. In 2002, the League attended the Healthy Schools Summit and joined the Illinois Healthy Schools Campaign, a statewide coalition working to heightenawareness of the need for environmentally safe schools. A major focus of the coalition is the promotion of policies that help eliminate the widespread, unnecessary, and harmful use of toxic pesticides in schools.

The League will work for a safer and more effective approach to pest control, encouraging local Leagues to work with their school districts in the implementation of safer pest management. LWVIL will continue to monitor pesticide legislation.

Large Scale Livestock Facilities
The League suports the strict regulation of large-scale livestock facilities on the state, regional, and county levels.
