RE: HB1252 Civics Education in Middle School and SB2236 Invest in Kids Funding
1st ACTION NEEDED
Please urge your state Representative to vote YES for HB1252 to require every public elementary school to include civics education in its 6th, 7th or 8th grade curriculum.
WHY IT MATTERS
Quality civics courses have tremendous impact. For example, when Florida introduced a required civics course in middle school, 61% of Florida students achieved proficiency in civics, compared to 22% of middle school students nationally in the most recent NAEP Civics Assessment.
Citizens with high levels of civic knowledge vote regularly and participate broadly in our democracy.
2nd ACTION NEEDED
Please urge your state Senator to vote YES for SB2236 which requires sufficient appropriations for public schools before tax credits are awarded to send children to private schools.
WHY IT MATTERS
The League opposes using public tax dollars to fund private schools. This bill would ensure that public schools are adequately funded before tax credits are used for private school scholarships.

RE: Congress Must Pass the Dream Act NOW
Call your Representative in Congress again to pass a clean Dream Act now!
Find phone numbers for your legislators at https://www.house.gov/representatives
In light of President Trump's State of the Union Address on January 30 where he continued to demonize immigrants and refugees, we are calling upon our state members to contact their representatives in Congress to demand a clean Dream Act, a Dream Act that does not come with the cost of a wall at our southern border and that does not compromise our current visa lottery and family reunification policies. Additionally, DACA ends on March 5, a date which is rapidly approaching. Congress needs to act now. Our senators already support Dreamers. We need to focus our efforts on Illinois members of the House of Representatives.

Congress Must Pass the Dream Act NOW
The League is appalled and disgusted by President Trump's racist statement made during a bipartisan meeting about immigration. Language and ideals like this have no place in our society, and certainly not in our White House.
This administration has done little but implement policies that endorse discrimination against immigrants and communities of color. As a country of immigrants, we are made stronger by our diversity, and that we have crude and bigoted slurs emerging from the Oval Office is shameful.
It's time for our leaders in Congress to choose a side. Will they stand for those that are working hard, paying taxes and contributing to our society on their path to American citizenship? Or will they tolerate racism and bigotry?
It's time for all members of Congress to support Dreamers and those protected by the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA); a policy the administration called an end for last year.
Stand with the League of Women Voters and contact your Senators and Representatives. They must pass a clean DREAM Act to protect, not turn away, the 800,000-young people who were brought to the United States as children. We can and we must do better to be vigilant about speaking out against racism. We must stand up as a nation and say this is unacceptable.
