2017 State of the State Luncheon
On October 11, 2017, the League of Women Voters of Illinois hosted its annual State of the State Luncheon at the Union League Club in Chicago.
This year’s theme: “Shining the Light of Truth; Keeping the Heat On” came from a quote by Ida B. Wells (1862-1931), journalist, newspaper editor, suffragist, and early leader of the civil rights movement: The way to right wrongs is to turn the light of truth upon them.
This event featured Illinois' Senior US Senator, the Honorable Dick Durbin and Renee Ferguson, award winning investigative reporter.
Senator Durbin and Ms. Ferguson engaged in a conversation about ensuring that racist policies are uncovered and corrected in our policies at each level of government -- national, state and local.
In 1999, after Ms. Ferguson uncovered racial discrimination by immigration agents at O'Hare, she worked with Senator Durbin for a federal review of customs policies nationwide. Their shared experiences made this year's program one of our most compelling.
This annual event celebrates the League's accomplishments and is a key component of our fundraising activity. Proceeds from the luncheon support our 501(c)(3) Education Fund and its mission of civic education and voter service.
