Get Involved: Become a Deputy Registrar
10/1/25
Are you passionate about civic engagement and making sure every eligible voice is heard at the ballot box? One of the most impactful ways you can contribute to democracy is by becoming a Deputy Registrar in Illinois.
Deputy Registrars are appointed volunteers who help register new voters, update voter information, and promote voter participation in their communities. If you’re looking to get involved, here’s what you need to know.
First, a Deputy Registrar is an individual certified to register people to vote in Illinois. This is a nonpartisan volunteer role that’s essential to the integrity and accessibility of elections.
Deputy Registrars can:
Register new voters
Update existing voter registrations (e.g., name or address changes)
Help voters understand registration requirements
Participate in voter registration drives
To qualify, you must:
Be at least 18 years old
Be a U.S. citizen
Be registered to vote in Illinois
Not be a candidate for any elected office
Appointments are often made through local political party organizations; a bonafide civic organization, such as the League of Women Voters; or directly through your local election authority.
Becoming a Deputy Registrar is easier than you think. Here’s a step-by-step guide:
If you are in the Chicago area, a bonafide civic organization will be required to sponsor you. League of Women Voters voter service chairs are empowered to send an email or letter on behalf of a League member to the appropriate county clerk or election authority.
For other areas of the state, contact your local Election Authority. Each county or municipality in Illinois has its own election authority (typically the County Clerk or Board of Elections). Find contact info.
Schedule Deputy Registrar training. Training is required and typically includes voter eligibility rules, registration form procedures, and legal responsibilities. Some training sessions are held in person, while others may be available online.
Complete the training. Once trained, you’ll receive a certificate or appointment letter confirming your status.
Start registering voters! As a certified Deputy Registrar, you can participate in community events, school programs, and more to help register voters.
Deputy Registrars are especially needed in the months leading up to an election, but you can apply any time of year. If you’re thinking about helping out for the upcoming elections, apply early to allow time for training and certification.
Deputy Registrars are the front line of voter access. Your involvement can make a real difference by ensuring everyone has a fair opportunity to participate in democracy. Plus, it’s a great way to connect with your community, educate others about their rights, and strengthen civic participation.
