League Action in June & July
7/31/25
Representing over 4200 members across the state, the Illinois League takes action to make sure all our voices are heard, often teaming up with other organizations to amplify our message. Here’s what we spoke out on in June & July:
LWVIL joined LWVUS to file an amicus brief supporting access to justice for voting rights organizations in the Supreme Court case Bost v. Illinois State Board of Elections.
Co-signed a letter to Senator Durbin and Senator Grassley along with LWVUS and LWV Iowa expressing concerns about a provision included in the One Big Beautiful Bill Act that would remove critical power from federal courts, stripping them of their enforcement ability and violating separation of powers. Language was subsequently removed from the bill prior to vote.
Co-signed a letter to the Illinois Housing Development Authority along with other members of our affordable housing coalition to urge them to address their lawful role in enforcing the rules set forth in the Affordable Housing Planning and Appeals Act as amended over the last five years.
Representing League members across the country, LWVUS also advocates for League causes by organizing resistance, speaking to lawmakers, and signing onto legal cases:
LWV CEO Celina Stewart remarked on the Department of Justice’s actions to gather voter data ahead of the midterms.
LWV CEO Celina Stewart spoke at the Chautauqua Institution about the importance of voting rights in the face of rising authoritarianism.
