Take Action: Proposed EPA Rules Leave Wetlands Vulnerable
1/2/26
On November 15, the US Environmental Protection Agency proposed new rules clarifying the definition of Waters of the United States (WOTUS). The proposed rules would significantly limit federal jurisdiction over wetlands and ephemeral streams, leaving these water bodies unprotected in states where there is not also state wetland regulation that would cover them.
You can help! Take a couple minutes and tell the EPA why wetland protection is important to you and the water bodies near you. Comments are due to the EPA on January 5. The online submittal process is very quick and simple.
The League of Women Voters of the Upper Mississippi River Region has analyzed the proposed rule and identified ways it will impact the Mississippi River. If you need a talking point or two, check out the comment letter LWV UMRR submitted or read some tips for submitting comments on their blog.
Wetlands keep our water clean, filtering pollution from farm fields that would otherwise contaminate streams and drinking water sources, harming our health. They soak up excess rainwater and protect communities from flooding. Wetlands are critical habitat for migratory birds and wildlife. And as natural carbon sinks, wetlands can help us fight climate change. Take a moment today to help us protect wetlands.
