Partisan gerrymandering serves to predetermine the outcome of our elections, robbing voters of a truly representative government.

That is why the League of Women Voters of Illinois is endorsing the latest effort by Fair Maps Illinois to amend the state Constitution and move Illinois a step closer to having legislative districts that reflect our voting population.

We’re embarking on a campaign to gather petitions to get redistricting reforms on the ballot ahead of decennial redistricting in 2030. In order to get on the ballot in Illinois, we must get at least 350,000 signatures. Our goal is 600,000 statewide.

You can help us collect signatures! Print petition sheets and gather signatures from friends and family, door-to-door in your neighborhood, or circulate and table at events where a large number of voters are gathered together, such as county fairs, picnics, school board meetings, high school sports games, and concerts.

To circulate petitions, you must be at least 18 years of age (or will be 18 by the General Election on November 3, 2026) and a citizen of the United States. Anyone signing the petition must be a registered voter in Illinois. We ask that you have all signatures completed and mailed by no later than Friday, May 1, 2026 so our team can review and submit in a timely manner.

So what’s the amendment?

The 2026 Redistricting Amendment would amend Sections 1 and 3 of Article IV of the Constitution to change the structure of the General Assembly so that the number of Legislative Districts is based on the population of the state following each decennial census and to change the procedure by which the General Assembly draws Legislative District maps by constituting a Legislative Redistricting Commission that will draw Legislative and Representative District maps using rational, neutral criteria.
