League Lobby Day in Springfield

5/8/25

On May 7, LWVIL members from across the state gathered in Springfield with a singular goal: to let lawmakers in both chambers know what is important to us, and to highlight bills that reflect our priorities.

With the help of a grant from the LWV of the United States, we augmented this year’s Lobby Day with a team of volunteers who make up LWVIL’s newly-minted Volunteer Lobby Corps. After a day of on-site orientation on May 6, the Lobby Corps was joined by another 40+ members for a day of formal meetings with members of the state House and Senate. Many attended committee hearings on pending bills and other topics of interest.

This year, LWVIL focused on two areas: protection of Constitutional rights and equity in education and housing. Local Leagues were also encouraged to discuss matters of importance to their members, including managing environmental waste and protecting aquifers from potential contaminants.

Bills our members supported:

  • HB3363 Public Defender Act (FAIR Act)

  • SB1181 Public Expression Protection

  • HB2545 Supportive Housing Appeals

  • SB1988 College Press as Pubic Media

  • HB3247 No Denial of Public Ed for Non-Citizens

  • SB1531 Polystyrene Containers

  • SB1723 Sole-Source Aquifer Protection

  • SB1872 Plastic Bag Elimination
