League Action in April & May
6/1/25
Representing 4200 members across the state, the Illinois League takes action to make sure all our voices are heard, often teaming up with other organizations to amplify our message. Here’s what we spoke out on in April and May:
Submitted a letter to the Chicago Sun-Times in response to a previously published letter by another party that Vote By Mail only benefits Democrats.
Submitted a letter to the Daily Herald related to the SAVE Act discussing the need for more balance between clean voter rolls and protecting citizens’ rights to vote.
Launched a Lobby Corps to lead our efforts to advocate for legislation in the Illinois General Assembly. Assembled fifty League members from across the state to lobby legislators in Springfield. We saw success with four priority bills passed!
Representing League members across the country, LWVUS also advocates for League causes by organizing resistance, speaking to lawmakers, and signing onto legal cases:
LWVUS and fellow voting rights organizations filed a lawsuit challenging President Trump's anti-voter executive order, which could disenfranchise millions of eligible voters. On April 25, a federal court judge issued a ruling temporarily blocking the administration from implementing a provision of the order.
LWVUS and partners filed an amicus brief urging federal courts to invalidate an executive order that seeks to revoke birthright citizenship for the children of undocumented persons or temporary legal residents.
LWVUS declared the US to be in a Constitutional Crisis and is launching a new initiative, Unite and Rise 8.5, to fight anti-democratic forces.
The League and the National Partnership for New Americans collaborated on a guide to supporting the immigrant community.
LWVUS CEO Celina Stewart responded to the arrest of Milwaukee County Circuit Judge Hannah Dugan.
LWVUS organized a Lobby Day on April 30 in Washington, DC, to meet with members of Congress and urge them to do their job to protect democracy and ensure our checks and balances are respected.
