League Joins Forces with Greater Chicago Food Depository

In our continued efforts to seek new ways to empower voters and address stubbornly low voter turnout rates, the League of Women Voters is launching a voter education and registration initiative with the Greater Chicago Food Depository (GCFD). Working with our Leagues in Cook County (both Chicago and suburban), the relationship creates a pathway for reaching potential voters in the safe, trusted, and convenient locations provided by participating GCFD pantries across the county.

LWVIL will be expanding with similar programs across the state in time for the November general election.

Federal budget cuts that take effect this year will hit many of GCFD's families hard. The League is pleased to assist the GCFD in its efforts to encourage all citizens to engage in civic action through the power of their vote.

Between now and the November election, the League will make our voter education and registration volunteers available on designated days at a network of GCFD’s food pantries. Food pantry clients can expect to learn about the identification needed to register, important voting dates, how to request a mail-in ballot, how to use VOTE411.org to find nonpartisan information about the candidates running for office, and other election-related information. Deputy Registrars will be available for anyone who needs help registering to vote.
